A broadleaf evergreen with cascading pink or white flowers in the spring. Many varieties have bright red new growth. Pieris prefer part shade and acidic, well drained soil. They mix well with azaleas, rhododendrons, and hosta. Mountain Fire is a tall variety with white flowers and red new foliage. Taiwan Prelude is a dwarf type with white flowers and green foliage. Valley Valentine as bright pink, almost red flowers. Rhododendrons
This is a huge group of flowering shrubs, some evergreen, some deciduous, and many native to our area. The most commonly planted are the evergreen varieties such as Catawba, which is native to the Southern Appalachians. They have large dark green leaves and 8 inch wide flower clusters in May and June. The flowers are purplish-pink and the plants grow 6 to 10 feet tall and wide. Many other rhododendrons are hybrids of native varieties in shades of red, pink, purple, lavender, and white. Rhododendrons prefer part shade, acid soils, and excellent drainage. Viburnum
Viburnums are some of the sturdiest, easiest to grow plants in the garden. Most have white flowers in the spring and red or blue berries loved by birds in the autumn. The old-fashioned snowball bush is a large 15 foot tall shrub with large clusters of white flowers in May. Summer Snowflake has layers of white flowers from May through July and grows only 6 feet tall. Yew
Yews are soft textured evergreen conifers that grow well in sun or shade. The dense spreading yew grows 3 to 4 feet tall and twice as wide, but responds well to clipping. Excellent for foundation plantings or for a low hedge. Emerald Spreader is a groundcover variety that spreads up to 10 feet wide, but only grows 30 inches tall. Capitata yews are frequently seen in a pyramid shape and can be used as accent plants or in containers. Other varieties such as Brownii and Hicks grow 10 to 15 feet tall.
