There are hundreds of different varieties of gorgeous iris for the garden, from tiny 4 inch tall bulbs that bloom in February to June blooming swamp plants that grow 5 feet tall.  The most popular ones for our gardens are the bearded, Siberian, Japanese and Louisiana.  The bearded iris come in every color of the rainbow, need full sun, and have a thick rhizome that needs to sit on the surface of the soil.  Siberian iris have beautiful grass like foliage that is attractive long after the flowers have past, and come in blue, purple, white, and yellow.  Japanese and Louisiana iris have the largest flowers and tallest foliage and will grow in well watered garden soil or at the edge of a pond. Phlox
Both the spring blooming groundcover moss phlox, commonly known as thrift, and the tall, summer blooming garden phlox make long lived, easy to grow perennials.  Both come in white, pink, rose, and purple.  Thrift is a low growing, spreading groundcover that blooms for 3 to 4 weeks in early spring.  Garden phlox has massed heads of flowers on upright stems and can grow 2 to 5 feet tall. Pin Cushion
This has blue or pink daisy like blooms around a pin cushion center on tall stems.  It likes limey to neutral soil.  Blooms last through the summer if spent blossoms are removed. This drought tolerant perennial has grass like foliage and spikes of flame colored flowers in red, orange, and yellow.  It blooms in late spring to early summer and makes a good cut flower. Salvia Salvia Greiggii Sedum Autumn Joy
Dense flower heads of pink, red, rust, yellow or white.  Numerous species ranging in size from groundcovers to 2 feet tall.  Thick, succulent leaves give this plant good drought tolerance.  Attracts butterflies. Yarrow
Coronation Gold Salvia
Dense, richly colored flower spikes in purple, red, and pink.  Blooms for a long time, especially if sheared after first group of flowers have faded.  Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Verbena Homestead Purple
This low growing perennial has fragrant flower clusters of pink, red, or purple.  It is free blooming and spreading.  Pinch to promote branching.  Ideal for the front of the border, as a blooming groundcover, or cascading over low walls.  Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Yarrow
Flat wide flower clusters generally in cream, yellow, pink, or red.  Drought tolerant with aromatic finely cut leaves.  Flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.
