Add texture to your shade garden with a varity of ferns. Japanese painted fern gives a silver and rose color to the garden. The new growth of the Autumn fern is orange and red. Maidenhair ferns have soft, delicate pale green foliage that is beautiful next to the large leaves of hosta or lady’s mantle. Shade to part shade. Height will vary. Foam Flower
White or pink airy blooms are held on spikes above the foliage in spring to early summer. The leaves vary in shape from hearts to oak leaves and can be solid green or mottled with purple. They form slow growing colonies, 6 to 12 inches tall, prefer partial shade and good drainage. Generally evergreen in our climate. Foxglove
Spectacular flowers are yellow, pink, or white bells held on upright stems above the foliage. Height varies from 2 to 6 feet. Bloom time is late spring to early summer. The purpurea varieties come in different colors, but mertonensis, also called the strawberry foxglove, is always rosey-red. These are short lived perennials but will self seed. 4 inch plants put out in the fall will bloom well the following spring. Partial shade. Hosta
This bold foliage plant is the queen of the Southern shade garden. Leaves can be blue green to lime green, many with cream or yellow variegation. They form long lived mounds or clumps and are reliable and sturdy perennials that will last for many years. Fragrant lavender or white flowers on tall stalks appear in mid-summer. Partial shade to deep shade. Iris Dwarf Crested
This small iris has lance like leaves and white or purple blooms in the spring. It spreads rapidly, adding interest to the woodland garden. Lady’s Mantle
This cottage garden favorite bears yellow-green flowers over a long period. The foliage is bright green and is known for holding droplets of water after a rain shower or heavy dew. Lamium
Yellow archangel (Lamium galeobdolon) is one of the best perennials for deep shade. The variegated leaves and yellow flowers spread quickly to bright up dark areas. Height is about 9 inches. Dead nettle (Lamium maculatum) prefers partial shade. The leaves are silver with a dark green edge, and the flowers come in white, pink, or purple. They spread slowly to form puddles of silver that contrast well with dark leaved shrubs like azaleas or hydrangeas. Lenten Rose
Lenten rose have dark green, leathery foliage that feels substantial, like a small shrub. The flowers appear in mid-winter, and are drooping clusters of white, pink, rose, or purple. Flowering can last for up to 4 months. Lenten rose are slow to establish, but will eventually make large clumps that are hardy and long lived. Shade or part shade. Solomon’s Seal
Fragrant white flowers hang like bells from arching stems. The leaves can be solid green, but the most common variety has leaves streaked with white. The leaves turn bronze in the autumn.
