Ajuga, or bugleweed, is a spreading groundcover for shade or partial shade. It can have green, purple or variegated foliage and has spikes of blue flowers in the spring. Ajuga is very hardy and easy to grow and can be invasive, but it makes an excellent groundcover and is beautiful in combination with azaleas and hosta. Astilbe
Fluffy flowers are born above deeply cut fern-like foliage. Flowers are long lasting, and come in shades from white to raspberry. Astilbe are best in part shade and moist soil. Barrenwort
This is a lovely shade perennial despite its unattractive common name. The new heart shaped leaves are tinted red, deepening to green in the summer and turning red or orange in the fall. Flowers can be white, pink or yellow and are delicate and subtle. Bleeding Heart Common
Diverse group in color and flower shape. Shasta daisies are white with a yellow center and bloom in June and July. Fall mums can range in shape from daisy-like forms to pincushion and pompom. Flowers come in every color except blue and can last from late summer to early winter. Columbine
This spring blooming perennial is easy to grow in partial shade. Dozens of varieties are available, both tall and short, and in every possible color and many color combinations.
