African Violet These fuzzy leaved plants come in a wide variety of colors. Keep the soil moist by watering from the bottom every few days, but don’t let the plant sit in water for more than an hour. Water on the leaves will cause dark circles to appear. Fertilize regularly to keep plants blooming. Aloe Vera This useful medicinal plant is an easy to grow and long lived houseplant. Let plant dry between watering and never let it sit in water. Use the gel to treat cuts, sunburns and insect bites. Store unused portions of the stems in the freezer until needed. Anthurium This beautiful tropical has red, pink, or white flowers held on tall stems above deep green, glossy foliage. It will bloom continuously with enough light and fertilizer. They are easy to care for in a sandy, well drained soil. Water infrequently. Croton The colorful leaves of the croton look like October in a pot, all yellow, red and orange melded together. Use these plants in mixed arrangements or on the summer patio. They need temperatures over sixty degrees, good drainage, and very bright light. Cyclamen The florist cyclamen is a winter houseplant with red, pink, white, or lavender flowers held above variegated foliage. Enjoy this plant in a cool, sunny window for 2 to 3 months and discard when blooming is past. Keep soil evenly moist, but not soggy. Ficus Ficus, or weeping fig, can be grown in bush or tree form, and have either solid green, or green and white leaves. Sometimes the tree forms will have a braided trunk. The alii variety with long thin leaves is easier to grow than the traditional type with more rounded leaves. Ficus will drop leaves if they are stressed, so keep them away from drafts in very bright light. Ficus Alii Ficus Bush Ficus Lyrata Kalanchoe Kalanchoe are the easiest of blooming houseplants. Their thick leaves hold water like a cactus. The heavy flush of blooms on the plant at time of purchase will last for 2 months or so, then prune off the old flower clusters and more blooms will emerge. They can tolerate low or medium light for several weeks, but need bright light and good drainage to rebloom. Rex Begonia Rex begonias are grown primarily for their colorful foliage in shades of pink, red, purple, and silver. Most plants will have sporadic pink or white flowers. They need moderate to bright light and moist, well drained soil.
