Viburnums are some of the sturdiest, easiest to grow plants in the garden.  Most have white flowers in the spring and red or blue berries loved by birds in the autumn.  The old-fashioned snowball bush is a large 15 foot tall shrub with large clusters of white flowers in May.  Summer Snowflake has layers of white flowers from May through July and grows only 6 feet tall. Commonly called Chinese Fringe Flower semi-evergreen plant has hot pink flowers over a long season.  Some varieties, such as Blush and Razzleberry have bronze colored new growth and green leaves.  Other varieties like Burgundy, Ruby, and Suzanne have reddish purple leaf color all year.  Chang’s Ruby and Suzanne grow 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide.  The other varieties can get 6 to 8 feet tall and wide.  This is a drought tolerant, easy to grow plant with few pest or disease problems.  It has a soft texture and an informal habit, but can be lightly pruned to control its size. Roses
Everyone is familiar with the long stemmed roses of Valentine’s Day.  Those hybrid tea roses can be challenging to grow, and are more attractive as cut flowers than in the garden.  The easiest roses to grow are the shrub roses.  The Knockout series comes in red, medium pink or pale pink and blooms from April to October.  It is hardy and disease resistant.  Carefree Sunshine is a long blooming yellow shrub rose.  The Flower Carpet series comes in red, coral, pink, white, and yellow and grows 3 feet tall and 6 feet wide.  Roses prefer full sun and regular fertilizer for best flowers.  Deciduous.
Spirea
Spirea is a large family of deciduous shrubs with showy flowers in either spring or summer.  The Bridal Wreath or Snowmound Spirea has button like clusters of white flowers on arching stems in late April or early May.  Snowmound grows 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, while the older Vanhoutte type grows 8 feet tall and 10 feet wide.  Summer flowering Spirea has flat clusters of pink or rose flowers on low, spreading plants.  Little Princess has pale pink flowers and grows 3 feet tall and 6 feet wide.  Other varieties have yellow, gold, or lime colored leaves.  Golden Sunrise has bright gold leaves all summer and turns orange in the fall. Weigelia
This is an old-fashion deciduous shrub that has been very popular in recent years as new varieties became available.  The leaves can be green, purple, or green striped with yellow.  Flowers can be white, pale to deep pink, red, or lavender.  Height varies dramatically from the 2 foot tall Midnight Wine to the 6 foot tall Red Prince.  Blooms are heaviest in the spring, and repeat sporadically all summer long.  Much loved by humming birds.
