Geraniums
Zonal geraniums have large ball shaped clusters of flowers on tall stems.  Bright red is the most popular color, but they also come in rose, pink, white, and lavender.  Ivy geraniums have smaller leaves and flowers that trail from hanging baskets or window boxes.  Both types of geraniums need plenty of fertilizer and full to part sun. These tropical shrubs have huge trumpet shaped flowers and love sun and heat.  Each flower only stays open for one day, but new flowers replace it the next morning.  Hibiscus come in both bush and tree form and are excellent for containers.  Flowers can be red, pink, yellow, or orange.  Use a fertilizer that has extra iron to keep the leaves deep green. Lantana are heat loving butterfly magnets.  The small flower clusters are produced in great numbers.  The solid colored varieties, white, yellow, or purple, tend to be low and spreading.  The bicolor types are taller and bushy, and can be yellow-pink or orange-red combos.  Lantana like full sun and are drought tolerant once established. Vibrant flowers in yellow and orange for beds or containers.  Flowers can be large and double, like pom-poms, or small and daisy-like.  Marigolds love heat and grow quickly, but spent flowers must be removed to keep the plants flowering.  Eight inches to 2 feet tall, full sun only. Mexican Heather
These low growing tropical shrubs have delicate purple or white flowers that combine well with large flowers like geraniums, petunias, or hibiscus.  Once they are established, Mexican Heather is extremely drought tolerant and easy to grow.  Full to part sun. 12 to 18 inches tall.  Good butterfly nectar plant. Million Bells
Million bells, or calibrachoa, are smaller flowered cousins of the petunia.  In the ground they will grow 4 to 6 inches tall and 2 feet wide, but they are most effective spilling out of pots and hanging baskets.  They come in every color except bright yellow.  The spent flowers fall off by themselves, so they are low maintenance.  Full sun. Coleus doesn’t need to flower because the leaves are so pretty.  Dozens of varieties are available with every possible pattern of red, gold, green, pink, purple, and orange on the leaves.  All types grow happily in the shade and some will even tolerate full sun if given plenty of water.  Grows 16 to 36 inches tall and wide.  Pinch back the stems to encourage the plants to branch out.
